What the test actually looks like

EduTest Scholarship — Year 7 Entry. Sat on a computer, no calculator and no dictionary, and deliberately longer than the time allows — finishing every question is not the goal.

SectionTimeLengthPractice ready
Verbal ReasoningWord knowledge under time pressure — synonyms, antonyms, analogies, odd-one-out and letter or word codes. Fast and shallow by design: recognise the pattern and move.30 minabout 60 questions*4 questions →
Numerical ReasoningReasoning with numbers rather than recalling method — sequences, ratios, rates and logic puzzles. EduTest splits this from Mathematics, which no other board does as cleanly.30 minabout 55 questions*37 questions →
Reading ComprehensionPassages with questions on meaning, inference, tone and author intent. Fiction, non-fiction and poetry all appear.30 minabout 50 questions*8 questions →
MathematicsCurriculum mathematics — number, measurement, space, statistics and probability. Tests what has been taught, where Numerical Reasoning tests how you think.30 minabout 60 questions*8 questions →
Written ExpressionOne piece, 15 minutes, no planning time — the prompt dictates the genre. A first-draft-only exercise: there is no time to plan then write.15 minabout 1 writing task*in preparation

* EduTest does not publish per-section question counts. Pacing targets are derived from the published time limits, not from any claimed item count. Time limits are the published ones; counts marked “about” are corroborated by third parties rather than stated by the test provider.

A score tells you nothing. This does.

Every question comes back with the reasoning — including why the tempting wrong answer was tempting. That is the part that changes the next attempt.

Example

A shelf holds 24 books. One third are hardbacks. How many are paperbacks?

8— that is the hardbacks. The question asked for the rest.
16— one third of 24 is 8, so two thirds are paperbacks: 24 − 8 = 16.

Answering the question that was asked, rather than the one you just worked out, is worth more marks under time pressure than any amount of extra arithmetic speed.

Every question she gets wrong, kept

Practice papers share one flaw: the questions your child gets wrong disappear the moment the paper is marked. Here they do not. Every miss, across every section and every sitting, goes into one place — and comes back on a schedule, spaced out, until it stops being a miss.

That matters most when the exam is still months away. Anything crammed in September is gone by June unless something brings it back.

Free to sit. Free to keep.

You can practise here without telling us anything. An account exists for one reason: without one there is nowhere to keep her mistakes, so every sitting starts from scratch. It costs nothing.

Common questions

Do I need an account to practise?

No. You can sit a timed section and have it marked, with worked solutions, without signing up. An account is only needed to keep results between sittings — including the questions your child got wrong.

Which exams does this cover?

EduTest Year 7 scholarship entry first, in depth. ACER and Academic Assessment Services (AAS) next. Selective school prep (NSW/VIC) is being considered after that.

What does it cost?

The practice you can see today is free. Nothing on this page is behind a payment.

Are these real past papers?

No, and they could not be — no provider releases them. Every question here is written independently in the style of the publicly described test formats, and each one is read by a person before it goes live.

Is this affiliated with EduTest, ACER or AAS?

No. Scholar's Alley is not affiliated with or endorsed by EduTest, ACER, Academic Assessment Services, or any school. Practice material is independently generated in the style of publicly described test formats.
